Candidate Profiles Election 2024

Matt Smith:

My name is Matt Smith and I am submitting this candidate profile for the open Board Director position with Burke Athletic Club.

A native of California, I attended the United States Coast Guard Academy after high school where I was a three-year starter on the varsity soccer team, and a captain of the varsity baseball team. My twenty year Coast Guard career has taken me to assignments in Boston, Louisiana, the Tidewater region, Seattle and now Washington D.C. where I am set to retire this summer.

My wife Libby and I were married in 2011 and have three sons and a daughter. Our three boys all participate in BAC’s soccer programs and our daughter is gearing up for her first season this Fall. This is my eighth season as a volunteer with BAC during which time I’ve coached 21 soccer teams ranging from U5 through U12, and I also serve as Age Group Coordinator for BAC’s U7/8, U9/10 and U11/12 Boys Rec Soccer programs.

I feel incredibly lucky to have landed with this club and its positive and inclusive atmosphere. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities my children have had with BAC, and they’ve certainly thrived here. I’m applying for the open Board Director position so I can help BAC continue to provide a top tier service to our community and, as someone whose family has benefitted first hand from our time with the club, help provide other families with a similar experience. I believe I’d be a tremendous asset to the Board in this regard, and I thank you in advance for your consideration.

Marbin Pineda:

As a child I always wanted to play organized sports, but as the son of a single immigrant mom in Los Angeles, I didn’t have the opportunity. About 10 years ago when my son turned 4, BurkeAC presented me the opportunity to coach him rec soccer. For me, this was my chance to get involved in organized sports. It has been one of the best decisions of my life. I have learned so much, not only regarding soccer, but about allowing children to grow at their own pace.  I always thank my soccer families for the memories and experiences they have given me through the gift of coaching.

As a board member, I would like to represent the values the club has shown me as a positive organization within the community. To me, Burke Rec Soccer is at its best when the volunteer members not only contribute their time, but also their love of sport, community and family.  I hope to represent these values as a member of the board.
